Property Penarth
Penarth was built around its docks which opened in 1865. The docks were commissioned to ship the huge volumes of coal being mined in South Wales, bringing prosperity to the area. Traditional terraced houses were built to accommodate the dockworkers, most of which still remain today. The Victorian era saw the construction of Penarth Pier and many large period houses. Penarth became a major holiday town and was often referred to as the “Garden by the sea” due to its beautiful parks and cliff top footpaths.
Today the docks have been replaced by the marina which is a great facility for local boat owners. This area also has a wide range of residential property, from one bedroom apartments to four bedroom town houses, many with water views. The Pont y Werin Bridge now links Penarth Marina to the Sports Village in Cardiff Bay where the Cardiff International Swimming Pool and the Kayaking Centre are located.
Housing around Penarth town centre is mainly traditional terraced houses constructed from local stone. “Lower Penarth” is predominantly Victorian and Edwardian houses. This area is particularly sort after by people who want original period features and it also lies within a conservation area. The “gardens area” is typical of houses built in the 1930s and there are also quite a few bungalows in Penarth, constructed in the 1950s. Inevitably Penarth has expanded over time and recently two large developments, Caversham Park and Regents Gate, have been built to the south-west of the town. This area is close to Cosmeston Country Park, a former quarry that is now a large lake and wildlife haven.
Penarth is very popular with commuters working in Cardiff due to its excellent train and bus links. The schools are well regarded and there are good facilities for families. With a wide range of property available to meet most requirements, Penarth continues to be a very attractive place to live.
